RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The present systematic review aims to assess the impact of the COVID19 pandemic on the sleep quality of students. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in the databases and in gray literature for articles published up to January 2022. The results included observational studies that assessed sleep quality through validated questionnaires, comparing moments pre and postCOVID19 pandemic. The risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Assessment Checklist. The Grading of Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of scientific evidence. Estimates of interest were calculated using random effects meta-analyses and possible confounding factors were meta-regressed. RESULTS: Eighteen studies were considered for qualitative synthesis and thirteen were considered for meta-analysis. Considering the comparison of means obtained by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, there was an increase in the scores obtained during the pandemic period [MD = -0.39; 95% CI = -0.72 - -0.07; I2 = 88.31%], thus evidencing a slight worsening in the sleep quality of these individuals. Risk of bias was considered low in nine studies, moderate in eight studies, and high in one study. The unemployment rate (%) in the country of origin of each included study partially explained the heterogeneity of analysis. GRADE analysis showed a very low certainty of scientific evidence. CONCLUSION: The COVID-19 pandemic may have a slight negative impact on the sleep quality of high school and college students, but the evidence is still uncertain. The socioeconomic reality must be considered when evaluating this outcome.

RESUMO

Microbial fuel cell (MFC) operation under similar conditions to conventional methods will support the use of this technology in large-scale wastewater treatment. The operation of scaled-up air-cathode MFC (2 L) fed with synthetic wastewater (similar to domestic) in a continuous flow was evaluated using three different hydraulic retention times (HRT), 12, 8, and 4 h. We found that electricity generation and wastewater treatment could be enhanced under an HRT of 12 h. Additionally, the longer HRT led to greater coulombic efficiency (5.44%) than MFC operating under 8 h and 4 h, 2.23 and 1.12%, respectively. However, due to the anaerobic condition, the MFC was unable to remove nutrients. Furthermore, an acute toxicity test with Lactuca sativa revealed that MFC could reduce wastewater toxicity. These outcomes demonstrated that scaled-up MFC could be operated as a primary effluent treatment and transform a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) into a renewable energy producer.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Purpose: this study aimed at assessing the legibility, reliability, usability and coverage of websites on cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) in Brazilian Portuguese and providing a global comparison. Methods: in order to evaluate the obtained data, four protocols were used, i.e., the Website Coverage Protocol, the legibility (by means of the COH METRIX PORT), the reliability (Discern Protocol), and the usability (by means of the System Usability Scale). Results: 98 websites were included with average legibility scoring of 31.6±11.7, rated as a hard readability level. Coverage average scoring was 19.9±3.79 from a total of 35 points. As for reliability, average scoring was 43.2±6.51 points, rated as acceptable. The usability scoring was 24.8±2.18 points, rated as the worst imaginable one. Conclusion: therefore, the assessed Brazilian websites on CL/P were rated difficult for legibility, requiring high-school level of education, restricted coverage and acceptable reliability, in addition to the low usability. The results were similar to those of websites from other countries, except for the legibility aspect, which was lower for Brazilian websites.

RESUMO

The aim of this observational, longitudinal and retrospective study was to evaluate the fidelity of virtual surgical planning (VSP) performed on Dolphin Imaging & Management Solutions® 11.95 software on hard tissues, using the tools of the open-source software OrtogOnBlender - Blender3D. For this, linear, angular and 7-point anatomical measurements of the skeletal profile were used, and the discrepancies between the VSP and the result after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery were calculated. Pre- and postoperative cone beam CT (CBCT) scans of 43 consecutive patients with class II and III skeletal deformities were evaluated and the results of the VSP were compared to the 1-month postoperative results. All overlapping points presented values within the range considered clinically irrelevant (< 2 mm and < 4°) and differences were not significant (p > 0.05). The comparison of anatomical points showed lower values (≤ 2.11 mm) in point A of class II. For hard tissues, the comparison between VSP and 1-month postoperative tomography demonstrated the faithful results of virtual planning using this software.

RESUMO

Objective: This observational and retrospective study evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of odontogenic cysts, outlining the epidemiological profile of these lesions. Material and methods: The following data were collected from the medical records of patients with a diagnosis confirmed by microscopy: age, sex, ethnicity, anatomical location, histopathological diagnosis and treatment, between 1995 and 2018. Results: Of the 70 cysts, 75.7% were inflammatory and 24.2% development. The inflammatory periapical cyst was the most prevalent (62.8%) followed by the dentigerous cyst (71.0%). The lateral radicular cysts and odontogenic keratocysts obtained the same percentage (5.7%), followed by the residual cyst (4.3%), paradental (2.8%) and the orthokeratinized variable (1.5%). Women were slightly more affected (1.12: 1) with greater involvement of leucodermas (80%). Age and anatomical location differed according to each lesion, although the anterior maxilla region was more affected. Enucleation was the most used treatment (75.7%), except for odontogenic keratocysts, in which marsupialization was performed in 75% of the cases. Conclusion: Epidemiological data provide an important insight into the prevalence, extent and severity of these lesions, allowing early diagnosis and prevention, in order to guarantee the reduction of cases and improve the quality of life of the population.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osseous components morphology and the condyle position in patients with different sagittal skeletal relationships, sex, and age, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). METHODS: The CBCT images of 180 asymptomatic patients (60 class I, 60 class II, and 60 class III) were assessed retrospectively. Groups were also divided according to age (<40 years, n = 90; ≥40 years, n = 90) and sex (male, n = 90; female, n = 90). Right- and left-sided TMJ spaces, articular eminence inclination (AEI) and height (AEH), thickness of the roof of the glenoid fossa (TRGF) and the anteroposterior position of the condyle in glenoid fossa were evaluated. Differences were tested using the analysis of variance, Tukey and t-tests (P < 0.05). RESULTS: For condylar position, no differences were found between sex and age groups, but spatial differences existed among skeletal classes. Significant differences were found between the right and left angular position in patients with malocclusion. Class II individuals presented lower anterior articular spaces. The condyle-glenoid fossa relationship presented a moderate correlation of bilaterality. The AEI and AEH were significant lower in class III individuals and class I patients presented the lowest values for TRGF. The values of AEH, TRGF and of all joint spaces of males were higher. In individuals over the age of 40 years, the AEI and AEH measurements were significant greater. CONCLUSION: Sagittal skeletal relationships have a significant effect on condyle position, AEI, and AEH. The eminence inclination and height and TRGF are influenced by sex and age.

The term mucocele can be defined as a 'pathological cavity containing mucus', and this content comes from the minor salivary glands, fitting in as a pathological process of these glands. Mucocele can be characterized by the mucous extravasation or retention phenomena, giving the diagnosis only through microscopic analysis. Clinically it is presented as a painless, circumscribed, normochromic or bluish nodule floating on palpation. It is predominantly located on the lower lip. The choice of treatment will depend on the analysis of some factors, such as the size of the lesion, its location, depth and the age of the patient. Surgical excision together with the accessory glands of the lesion is the most indicated. There are several techniques for performing such a procedure and the Shira technique was the option for this case report. This technique is based on the careful injection of irreversible hydrocolloid material (alginate) into the lesion previously emptied of its mucoid content in order to delimit it and facilitate surgical removal. Using this technique reduces the chances of recurrence of the lesion, because with the use of alginate the lesion is well delimited facilitating surgical excision, but even with this technique the patient should be guided to remove the etiological factors involved, since its permanence will lead to recurrence of the lesion(AU)

RESUMO

Visceral leishmaniasis is a systemic disease that is potentially severe and endemic in Brazil. It clinically manifests as fever, weight loss, swelling, hepatosplenomegaly, paleness, and edema. In this study, we discuss a case of a 1-year-old child diagnosed with refractory visceral leishmaniasis after being treated with liposomal amphotericin B in two distinct occasions. Considering the persistent clinical features and weak response to conventional treatment, a combination therapy with liposomal amphotericin B (ambisome), n-methylglucamine antimoniate (glucantime), and pentamidine isethionate was initiated, and response to treatment was good.

RESUMO

Alternating current (AC) is known to inactivate microbial growth in suspension, but how AC influences anaerobic biofilm activities has not been systematically investigated. Using a Geobacter dominated anaerobic biofilm growing on the electrodes of microbial electrochemical reactors, we found that high frequency AC ranging from 1 MHz to 1 kHz (amplitude of 5 V, 30 min) showed only temporary inhibition to the biofilm activity. However, lower frequency (100 Hz, 1.2 or 5 V) treatment led to 47 ± 19% permanent decrease in limiting current on the same biofilm, which is attributed to the action of electrohydrodynamic force that caused biofilm damage and loss of intercellular electron transfer network. Confocal microscopy images show such inactivation mainly occurred at the interface between the biofilm and the electrode. Reducing the frequency further to 1 Hz led to water electrolysis, which generated gas bubbles that flushed all attached cells out of the electrode. These findings provide new references on understanding and regulating biofilm growth, which has broader implications in biofouling control, anaerobic waste treatment, energy and product recovery, and general understanding of microbial ecology and physiology.

RESUMO

Produced and flowback waters are the largest byproducts associated with unconventional oil and gas exploration and production. Sustainable and low cost technologies are needed to treat and reuse this wastewater to avoid the environmental problems associated with current management practices (i.e., deep well injection). This study presents a new process to integrate AC-powered electrocoagulation (EC) with granular biochar to dramatically reduce energy use and electrode passivation while achieving high treatment efficiency. Results show achieving a 99% turbidity and TSS removal for the AC-EC-biochar system only used 0.079 kWh/m(3) or 0.15 kWh/kg TSS, which is 70% lower than traditional DC-EC systems and orders of magnitude lower than previous studies. The amount of biochar added positively correlates with energy saving, and further studies are needed to improve organic carbon and salt removal through system integration.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to identify the perceptions of healthcare workers regarding the principle of comprehensiveness. To do this, a research was performed with five workers from a Family Health Unit located on the east side of São Paulo. This study was performed with a qualitative approach, using interviews and thematic analysis. Three categories emerged from the discourses: comprehensiveness as the profile and practice of healthcare professionals, focused on the humanization of care; comprehensiveness as the organization of the health service and working process; and comprehensiveness as the integration of the unit with other health services. In each dimension, it was revealed that the workers perceived the absence or presence of this principle as a guide for healthcare, problematizing the advancements and problems they experienced, as well as the challenges involved in changing the healthcare model.

PURPOSE: to investigate the influence of the type of linguistic stimulus presentation on phonological memory. METHODS: 27 2nd grade students of a public elementary school with ages ranging between 7 and 8-years old were assessed (59.25

girls). The students had no history or complaints of neurological, cognitive or auditory deficits. The children passed the Auditory Processing Simplified Assessment and were submitted to a syllable or pseudo-word repetition task. The stimuli were recorded and presented as: I) fluent - (pseudo-words presented within a 10-second interval) - presented to 13 students, and II) syllabic - 01-second intervals between syllables and 10-second intervals between each series - presented to 14 students. The repetitions were transcribed; the errors were marked, analyzed and compared according to gender and stimuli presentation pattern. RESULTS: according to the analysis, a one syllable difference was observed, with a better performance when the second list was presented and starting with the 5 syllable stimuli, a higher percentage of correct answers on list 1, when compared to list 2. Gender comparison showed significant differences for the 5 syllables stimuli on the general analysis and on list 2, with better results for boys. CONCLUSION: there was no difference in performance up to the extension of 4 syllables. The presentation of the fluent form facilitated phonological memory performance for both male and female students when the presented stimuli were longer.
